The Series Highlights Berlin’s Post-War Housing Estates
Photographer Malte Brandenburg photographed the post-war housing estates that are spread throughout Berlin for his Stacked series. Brutalist in their basic structure, the affordable apartments were decorated with small personal details and facades to help create a sense of individuality—a bichromatic set of panelling on one side, or staggered apartments to create new angles. The photographs highlight these indiosyncracies, and the series explores the tension between the built and lived experience: constructed quickly to home the population's overflow, the apartments’ upkeep is now a burden to a city which has slowly moved away from the design, architecture, and social principles to which these buildings abided.
