Officine Universelle Buly returns to a resolutely Art Deco atmosphere, with the promise to look like it set up shop around the opening of the Bergdorf Goodman department store in 1899. Officine Universelle Buly’s shop in Tokyo represents an architectural extravagance—a space that embodies the bridges built by Buly be- tween eras and cultures. This audacity was rewarded with two prizes at the 2018 Frame Awards. One half of this bisected store is straight out of 19th-century France: marvellously refined wooden or- naments—pillars with helicoidal engaged columns, candelabras with their bobeches, dentil frieze, cornice, and coffered ceiling—are on display, like a Haussmanian facade.
The catalog is the cornerstone of the brand’s universe, according to Victoire de Taillac: “The magically illustrated Buly catalog is a gospel that tells the story of the brand’s universe, both material and immaterial. To celebrate the opening of the second Buly store, and the first outside France, Touhami refrained from reusing the codes defined for the rue Bonaparte in their entirety. “We need to innovate! The space does dis - play French ornamental elements such as a mural inspired by a me- dieval pharmacy in Burgundy, which took a specifically mandated decorative painter weeks to design.
On the way to this floral cabinet, the visitor needs to walk through one of the Saintonge Officine’s cupboards with a hidden door. For Ramdane Touhami, this room ‘‘en enfilade’’ brings a slight fantasy atmosphere. Like the wardrobe in Narnia, it is a frontier between two worlds. After a short journey, a majestic—yet intimate—office presents its outdated walls to the eye: casts, frames, and plaster busts bring their company to the preserved beauty of thousands of herbs suspended in a sky of flowers
