When the Mykonian owners of a plot of land, formerly their grandparents’ home, and their business partners came to architecture firm K-Studio and interior practice Studio Bonarchi, they were assembling a family of sorts—one that would look to island tradition and share a common vision when developing Kálesma, a boutique hotel and something of a departure from its resort neighbors.
Mediterranean architecture has been a site of innovation and experimentation for centuries. Today—whether in careful restorations of traditional homes, reinterpretations of the local vernacular, or exciting new contemporary spaces—that tradition is alive and well.
Cercal House is set into a sloping site in Alentejo in southern Portugal. Conscious of the house’s relationship with the rolling, dusty landscape, the Lisbon-based architecture firm Atelier Data recessed the monolithic white structure to minimize its visual presence and drew on a traditional gabled archetype for its form.
When Studio Andrew Trotter was approached to design a vacation home that felt like it belonged to the southern Italian region of Puglia, the practice had already proven it had a mastery of the local architecture. Though based in Barcelona, the studio had sensitively reinterpreted the traditional style for a country house, and they were invited to revisit this approach on a smaller, domestic scale for Villa Cardo. Though the Villa Cardo has been extensively derived from traditional Pugliese houses—down to the authentic chianca limestone flooring—the interiors lend a contemporary, minimal aesthetic designed by the Studio Andrew Trotter.
For the design of this summer house on the Greek island of Serifos, Athens-based Sinas Architects looked to the austere rocky landscape for inspiration: the steep slopes with thorny bushes, the large rock formations, and, in particular, the xerolithies. The Project Xerolithi is featured in The Mediterranean Home an architecture book by gestalten.
This finca was built in the 19th century as a vacation home by Menorcan merchants. It sits on top of a hill on the Balearic island with panoramic views across the rolling landscape, but remained empty for about 50 years before owners Benedicta Linares and Benoit Pellegrini embarked on a year-long program of redecoration and renovation.
Casa Azul was directly informed by the surrounding landscape. After visiting the site in the arid Alentejo region of southern Portugal, Lisbon-based Bak Gordon Arquitectos developed a design around two “fresco” rooms that rise at either end of the largely single-story holiday home.
Trulli have been built in the Itria Valley in Puglia for centuries. These traditional circular huts with distinctive conical roofs are remarkably thermally efficient, as the thick drystone walls ensure the houses stay cool in the intense summer heat of southern Italy. For a vacation home in the region, Reisarchitettura drew directly from this iconic and hyper-localized architecture, renovating and expanding an existing trullo.
Villa Chams occupies a rugged spot in Baalbek, the City of the Sun, in Lebanon’s most ancient and arid of landscapes. Inspired by Baalbek’s Roman Temple of Bacchus, in which musician and the home’s architect, Carl Gerges, once performed with his band Mashrou' Leila, the building rises with purpose from the ground, a beautifully orchestrated ensemble of earth-toned walls and columns. The traditional bamboo pergola that provides shade to the outdoor dining area is continued as the ceiling inside, creating a sense of continuity between interior and exterior spaces in this Mediterranean home.
Recalling irrigation tanks that are common in the south of Portugal, the pool of this Mediterranean house was conceived as a “resonance box” by the architects, reflecting the landscape as it changes throughout the day.
