We spoke to one of the designers featured in Ukraine Rising, Julie Yarmoliuk, creative director and owner of wearable couture brand J'amemme.
Do you think there has been an influence, directly or indirectly, of Ukrainian traditions/cultures in your designs or ideas?
Our product is all about unusual materials and avant-garde cuts. We succeeded because of a combination of an impressive architectural silhouette and the weightlessness that [the fabric] organza gives. From the beginning, from our first collection that was presented in New York City, we wanted to show how unique and truly international Ukrainian products can be. Our craftswomen weave their own vision of art and Ukrainian traditions into each item we create.
Why is it important for you to promote both a zero-waste and a female-focused business?
Nowadays, many people don’t focus on brands’ social responsibility. A zero-waste product is a way to show that we care about the future of our planet. Our brand wants to be responsible for our production and promote it to the world. Speaking of a female-focused business, it’s simple, we already made an example of successful business, that was founded by a female. Now we also want to give all the woman entrepreneurs strength and courage to declare themselves.
Why is it important for your work to be made in Ukraine? Do you see this as something you can maintain indefinitely?
We independently create invoices for tailoring things that require a considerable investment of time and high qualification of the craftswoman. For me, the importance of Ukrainian craftswomen, especially for handmade pieces, is expressed in the way they see our products. They create them with so much love and their perspective on our art. Ukrainian craftswomen can express our national identity in the way no one else can. Our brand also wants to show to the world how talented and hardworking people Ukrainians are.
